How do you calculate the pH of a buffer solution?

2 Answers

You use the equation of Henderson-Hasselbalch.

A buffer is a solution of a weak acid and its conjugate base.

#underbrace ("HA")_text(acid) + "H"_2"O" ⇌ "H"_3"O"^+ + underbrace("A"^-)_text(base)#

The Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation gives you the pH of the buffer.

#"pH" = "p"K_"a" + log("[base]"/"[acid]")#
