A monomer is one unit, a polymer is more than one in a chain.

Explanation:

For enzymes (and organic molecules in general) the term monomer refers to a single molecule of the compound being considered.

If two of these molecules were to interact in such a way as to become linked in a chain while still remaining distinct and identical, they would be a dimer.

Extending this principle we have trimers, quadramers, pentamers, etc... When it's inconvenient or unnecessary to count the individual units you just say polymer.

For example, look up PVC a common plastic.

Proteins are also polymers of amino acids. Hence polypeptides.
