A hypothesis is an educated guess.
Explanation:
When a scientist observes that there is a specific problem and he or she seeks out an answer to it, they would set up an experiment. But before actually experimenting, the good scientist will first make a write-up of his/her initial observations, the problem he or she is seeking out, research about it and then make a hypothesis - or a "guess" of what will probably happen (what the scientist expects) after the experiment.
