Oxygen acts as a terminal electron acceptor which allows substrates to be reduced thereby extracting energy though breaking down of bonds in substrates. While nitrogen is used in used for the production of amino acid (for protein synthesis)

Explanation:

There are other roles through use in nitric oxide for cell signalling. Nitrogen is also present in glucosamine. There are a lot of other metabolite that contains oxygen.
