An impulse casues the release of neurotransmitters from the first neuron which can trigger an impulse in the second

Explanation:

When the impulse (or 'action potential') reaches the presynaptic terminal (the end of the neuron) of the first neuron, it causes a number of neurotransmitters to be released into the synaptic cleft (the bit between the two neurons).
These neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft before binding to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron.
If a number of factors are met, this may trigger an impulse in the second (postsynaptic) neuron
