Red blood cells carry 97% of all the oxygen from lungs to tissues. Oxygen binds to heme part of haemoglobin.
These cells also carry 23% of all the carbon dioxide from tissues to lungs. Carbon dioxide is bound to globin part of hemoglobin.
RBCs are also able to carry carbon monoxide (an undesirable characteristic).
