Decomposition is the process of deconstructing a complex molecule into the building blocks from which it is composed.
The best example of this is the use of detrivores feeding on decaying matter and returning the complex carbohydrates and cellulose of plant material into the carbon, hydrogen oxygen and nitrogen atoms and molecules that return to the soil of the earth.
Microbes take on the role of the workers on a dis-assembly line for this decomposition process.
This may be too simplistic an answer, but I like to KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid!
