You have 0.1*mol of stuff dissolved in 1*L of water............

Clearly this solution has units of concentration, in mol*L^-1. You take 5*mL of this solution, and "how many moles do you have?"

well the product, "concentration"xx"volume" gives:

0.1*mol*cancel(L^-1)xx5xx10^-3cancelL=??mol

And the answer is in "moles", as you require. Had you got an answer with units of L or L*mol^-1 you would know that something had gone awry - it is easy to make these kind of mistakes. Anyway, if you would respecify your question, someone will have another go.
