$x = - 3$ $x=-3$

It is given that;

$x + 5 = 2$ $x+5=2$

Subtract $5$ $5$ from both sides;

$x + 5 - 5 = 2 - 5$ $x+5-color (green)5=2-color (green)5$

$x = - 3$ $x=-3$

Graphical approach

The other answers are the most efficiant means of solving this question, but i just wanted to provide a graphical interpritation:

Red $\Rightarrow y = x + 5$ $=> y = x +5$
Blue $\Rightarrow y = 2$ $=> y= 2$

Where these two lines intersect, that is the solution to the problem:

Hence we see they cross at $(- 3, 2)$ $(-3,2)$

$\Rightarrow x = - 3$ $=> x= -3$

Im not sure if you learnt about grpahs of lines, but when you do, this is an interesting way of thinking about it!
