$x=1$ , $y=3$

Number of apples in the room

$2x+6y=20$

$x+3y=10\ .......(1)$

Number of bananas in the room

$4x+8y=28$

$x+2y=7\ .......(2)$

Subtracting (2) from (1), we get

$x+3y-(x+2y)=10-7$

$y=3$

substituting $y=3$ in (1), we get

$x=10-3y=10-3\cdot 3=1$

$\therefore x=1, y=3$
