Elements can transmute, but this is not the province of the chemist.
Explanation:
Elemental transmutation is the province of the nuclear physicist. Larger elements can split apart (fission), and smaller elements can fuse. That's about all I know on the matter. Except that the energy available from nuclear reactions dwarfs the energy available from chemical reactions.
