In dealing with both extremely large and extremely small numbers the use of an exponent, positive and negative, in scientific notation standard practice.
If, for example, you wanted to show the size of a single atom of hydrogen it would be: 1.2 x 10 to the -10 power. The long form would look like: .000000000012.
