I don't know about Denmark Vesey, but I do know about Nat Turner. Nat Turner was a Christian and could read the Bible. He was viewed as a sort of religious leader by his fellow slaves. One day there was a solar eclipse and he took it as a sign from God to start an insurrection. He and a few other slaves armed themselves with melee weapons and broke into their owner's house, and killed him and his family along with other whites there and the time.
It was a violent revolt. He rampaged throughout the state, killing over 60 whites. His band grew to over 70 slaves.
Vigilantes and militia flooded into the state and Nat Turner's band was over-powered. Nat Turner himself was captured and executed later on.
He viewed himself as a martyr, at his execution he stated: "Was Christ not crucified too?"
