By it's characteristics.
Explanation:
The Sun is a gaseous body where fusion converts hydrogen into helium. The surface is hot and so is the interior. It is the largest component of the Solar system. All these features make us classify the Sun as a star and not a planet. All the planets orbit the Sun. (heliocentric model). and the Sun orbits the center of the Milky Way. The Sun does not orbit any planet eg) geocentric model fails.
