$4.5 \cdot 10^{4} = 0.45 \cdot 10^{5}$ $4.5*10^4=0.45*10^5$ (one to the left = power up by one)

Now you can add:

$0.45 \cdot 10^{5} + 3.0 \cdot 10^{5}$ $0.45*10^5+3.0*10^5$
$= (0.45 + 3.0) \cdot 10^{5} = 3.45 \cdot 10^{5}$ $=(0.45+3.0)*10^5=3.45*10^5$
