Let's just plug #x=1# and #y=4# into these equations. For the first equation, we get

#4=3(1)-2=>4=1=>4!=1#

Since #4# is obviously not equal to #1#, #(1,4)# is not a solution to this equation. What about our second equation?

#y=-x#

Let's plug in our values. We get

#4=-1=>4!=-1#

Since these values are not equal, the point #(1,4)# is not a solution to the equation.
