we let $a/b=0.3333333333...$ first equation
multiply both sides of the equation by 10

we have
$10a/b=3.33333333....$ second equation

subtract now the first from the second equation

$10a/b-a/b=3.333333333....-0.33333333....$

$9a/b=3$

divide both sides by 9

$a/b=3/9=1/3$

therefore $-0.33333333=-1/3$
