The negative index of 10 indicates that you are dividing by 10, twice:

9.01 xx 10^-2 = 9.01 div 10 div 10

= 0.0901

OR

You can write this as a fraction:

9.01 xx 10^-2 = 9.01 xx 1/10^2 = 9.01 xx1/100

=0.0901

OR

You can simply apply the rule which says move the decimal point to the left by 2 places.

9.01 xx10^-2 = 0.0901
