So you started with

The first thing you'd do is distribute the #4# to the #3p# and #1# that are in parentheses, which is just #4 * 3p# and #4 * 1#.

Your equation would then look like:

You'd then add like terms, which in this case is #12p# and #5p# on the right side of the equation, giving you
