You need a blow torch because the melting point of the crystal is approx. 801801 ""^@CC. And you need an alumina crucible because the melting point of pyrex, i.e. borosilicate, is approximately round here.

It is a fact that the melt will conduct electricity due to mobility of the molten ions.........
