The question should have been How old ARE Sam and John and NOT How old IS Sam and John!!!. Coming to the Maths part, Let Sam's age be x years. Then John is x + 8 years. The sum of their ages is x + x +8 = 2x + 8 and this is equal to 38 (given)
So 2x + 8 = 38 or 2x = 38 - 8 = 30 or x = 30 / 2 = 15 years (which is Sam's age) and John's age is 15 + 8 = 23 years
