What are gonadotropins?

Gonadotropin hormones act on the gonads which are the testes in the male in the ovary in the female. These gonadotrophic releasing hormones are produced by the hypothalamus.

These releasing hormones cause the anterior pituitary gland to produce 2 hormones: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

Follicle-stimulating hormone stimulates development of egg containing follicles in the ovaries, it stimulates the cells around the eggs to secrete estrogen and it stimulates the production of sperm cells.

Luteinizing hormone promotes secretions of sex hormones, stimulates the release of the egg from the ovary, promotes growth of long bones.
