What are the y-intercepts of 2x+y^2=36 ?

The y intercepts are given when x = 0.

2(0) + y^2 = 36

0 + y^2 = 36

y^2 = 36

y = +- 6

Thus, there will be y intercepts at (0, -6) and (0, 6).

The graph of the relation (this is not a function) confirms:

graph{2x + y^2 = 36 [-22.14, 22.15, -11.07, 11.07]}

Practice exercises:

  1. Determine the y intercepts of the following relations:

a) x^2 + y^2 = 9

b) log_2(x + 2) = y

c) e^(4x) + 6 = y

d) 2x + |x + 4| = y^2

Hopefully this helps, and good luck!
