It dissociates.

Explanation:

The proton or protons (=H^+) attach to a water molecule to form the hydronium ion:
H^+ + H_2O->H_3O^+

The rest of the acid is left as an anion. Example:
HCl+H_2O->H_3O^+ +Cl^-
