7 9/10 = (10xx7+9)/10 = 79/10

Explanation:

Remember that a whole number is:

8/8, 3/3, 11/11, 40/40, etc

In this case we are working with the fraction 'tenths'.
Each whole number is 10/10

In 7 whole numbers there will be 7 xx10 = 70 tenths

70/10 = 7

There are also 9 extra 'tenths'.

In total there are 10xx7 +9 = 79 tenths.

7 9/10 = (10xx7+9)/10 = 79/10

With practice you would start to use shortcuts and speed up solving this type of question.

79/10

Explanation:

Write as 7+9/10

Multiply by 1 and you do not change the value. But 1 comes in many forms so you can change the way a number looks without changing its value.
