A chemical element is a pure substance that consists of atoms with the same number of protons in the nucleus.
For example, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are elements. Their atoms have six, seven, and eight protons, respectively, in their nuclei.
Other examples of elements are iron, copper, gold, mercury, and lead.
