What is a double replacement reaction?

1 Answer

A double replacement reaction occurs between two ionic compounds and produces two new ionic compounds as products.

An example is:
#FeCl_3(aq) + NaOH(aq) -> Fe(OH)_3(s) + NaCl(aq)

Positive ions: Fe^(3+) and Na^+
Negative ions: Cl^- and OH^-

Note that positive ions must pair with negative ions in compounds!

Here is a video which discusses this reaction in more detail.
