Runoff is the draining away of water from the surface of an area of land when the rain hits the surface.

Explanation:

It can carry pollutants through its path and when it reaches to the water reservoirs it can pollute the water. Especially if runoff carry phosphorus containing materials to a lake, then algea growth can happen and eutrophication problem will occur.
