What phases of matter are present in soda?

1 Answer

There is one phase of matter in a bottle of soda: a liquid phase.

Soda is a mixture of water, carbon dioxide gas, and solid sugar. Sugar is dissolved in water, and carbon dioxide is dissolved in water under pressure.

This solution is a single phase.

When one opens the soda bottle, the carbon dioxide (gas) comes out of the soda bottle/can in the form of fizz. Sugar remains dissolved in water.

At this point, you have two phases: the liquid and the gas bubbles of CO₂.

If you pour the soda into a glass containing ice cubes, then you have three phases: solid ice, liquid soda solution, and gas bubbles.
