South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union, most southern states(slavery was legal in all of them) followed. Fort Sumter in South Carolina is where the conflict, it was where tariffs were being collected. Tariffs were collected in Fort Sumter and Lincoln made them 80% of federal taxes(though the South only made up 30% of the US population).
