Kennedy managed to carry most of the South and most of Eastern states, Nixon carried the West and part of the Midwest.
Explanation:
In the early sixties, the Democratic Party still carried the South in presidentil elections. In 1964, because of the opposition to Segregation the Deep South supported Barry Goldwater in 1964, and after the 1960s most southern states became red.
California and the other West Coast states were not liberal states in those days.
