Why is it advantageous for cells to have active transport mechanisms?

because sometimes there are materials outside the cell which it needs, but they are found in lower concentration than inside the cell. In this case the cell will pay some energy to get them in against the concentration gradient. The same applies if the material is inside the cell and it needs to get them out where there is a high concentration of it.
