Ok, here goes again. You ought to gave a little more detail: unless we know what exactly the short wire was connected to we can't possibly say what happened. Presumably there was some sort of circuit, Or is it an exercise taken from some book you can refer us to.
@Becca M.: Am I missing something? I only see a very ill-posed question, which cannot have a sensible clear answer,
