Can a blood clot in the leg cause swelling? If so, would swelling be noted above the clot or below, or both?

Please see the explanation part.

Explanation:

Generally, the condition is called edema. The region of the edema due to the blood clot or thrombus is painful to palpation. There are veins seen very often in that region. And sometimes, due to the rupture or any other cause the area can be purplish due to the blood that comes from the vein(s). The condition is known as hemorrhagic.

In order to find the exact location of the thrombus you have to use ultrasonography techniques at least. Computerized tomography can be also used as one of the tests.
