The main function of the lungs is to aid in the diffusion of oxygen into blood capillaries, and CO2 out of the blood, this is called gas exchange, which occurs in the alveoli of the lungs. The oxygen that you inhale will go straight into your bloodstream and throughout your body, and the carbon dioxide that you exhale is removed from your blood - all of which takes place in your lungs!
