At maturity, most angiosperms' cotyledon(s) shrivel and may fall off.

As can be seen from the above image, the cotyledons play an integral role in seed germination and early growth; however, towards maturity they shrivel.

An aside: there is some research into how early cotyledon damage can actually affect the number of seeds a plant produces at maturity.
