Why do some people feel threatened by diversity?

One hypothesis is that our fear of cultural and racial diversity stems from our tribal past, wherein we divided the world into "us and them".

Explanation:

Evolutionary psychologists and anthropologists have studied current hunter/gatherer societies and found them to be xenophobic or afraid of strangers who are not part of their tribe (the "us" part). So, they hypothesize that our fear of cultural or racial diversity probably stems from this basic fear of strangers. Strangers might literally kill you when you encountered them, unless you could establish some kind of family relationship.
