Did most wealthy immigrants go to Ellis Island?
1 Answer
All immigrants to New York went through Ellis Island although those of means were certainly able to cut through any red tape.
Explanation:
in the early 1900s there were three main ports of debarkation, Ellis Island is just the best known. Boston and Baltimore also served as ports of entry to thousands of immigrants each year. However, what you can see is that those immigrants that did go through Ellis Island and were of substantial financial means had a much easier journey into the United States. For instance, their medical and legal inspections were done onboard their vessel instead of on Ellis Island and were less detailed and more speedy.
