Why is the site called Socratic?

My assumption is that it is in honor of the early Greek educator Socrates (but perhaps one of the site originators can give a more complete answer).

(...another assumption: you mean "Why is...?")
This is perhaps a good question since the style of education being provided (remember that the objective of this site is education) is not Socratic in form. "Socratic education" is education based on asking the student questions (not on answering questions).
Originates from Socrates I suppose.
The intent was the "discussion format" used by Socrates. Properly used, it takes time, but develops better critical thinking by the students.
Explanation:
As Alan P. noted, the functional modus of the site is more of answering questions rather than a discussion by helping the student formulate additional guiding questions.
Thus, the "forum" style has been adopted, if not actually the teaching mechanism of Socrates.
Yeah the first answer is right, because of Socrates.
Explanation:
It can also be due to the discussion format by him: Socratic Seminars.
A Socratic seminar is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions. Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others.
The Socratic Method, created by Socrates.
