Combine like terms and isolate the variable.

Explanation:

Get all the terms with p on the left side of the = sign and everything else on the right.

p - 5p - 4p = - 8 + 2

combine like terms

-8p = -6

divide both side by -8 to get only p on the left

(-8p)/(-8) = (-6)/(-8)

p = 6/8 (6/8 is positive because two negatives is a positive)

reduce to lowest terms

p = 3/4
