Minipulate one of the equations so that when you subtract or add the equations, one of the variables will cancel

Example,

#x+2y=1# equation 1
#3x+y=1# equation 2

Multiply equation 2 by a factor of #2,# therefore

#x+2y=1# equation 1
#6x+2y=2# equation 3

Subtract the two to cancel the #y# variable,

#-5x=-1#
#x=1/5#

Sub #x=1/5# into equation 1, and solve for x

#1/5+2y=1#
#y=(1-1/5)/2#

#y=8/5#
