Starting with the quadratic formula:

#v = (-b\pm sqrt(b^2-4ac))/(2a)#

where

#a=1, b=2, and c=-8#

Gives:

#v= (-2\pm sqrt(2^2-4*1*(-8)))/(2*1)#

#v= (-2\pm sqrt(4+32))/2#

#v= (-2\pm sqrt(36))/2#

#v= (-2\pm 6)/2#

#v= -8/2 or 4/2#

#v = -4 or 2#
