Generally, it was to use their "Middle Class" wealth to move more towards the acquisition and use of "Upper Class" facilities, if not social status.
In the late 19th century about 80% of the population of the population was working class. In order to be considered middle class you had to have at least one servant. Most servants were female.
More opportunities for women to work evolved, and were sought after by women.
In the 19th Century Middle class boys went to grammar schools. Middle class girls went to private schools were they were taught 'accomplishments' such as music and sewing.
More time and effort was spent on leisure activities like sports and toys.
