Explanation:
If two or more travelling waves are passing through a medium, the resultant wave is found by adding together vectorially, the displacements due to the individual waves at all points in the medium.
For example, in water waves: if one wave is displacing a point upwards 10cm and the other wave is displacing the same point upwards 15cm at same time, then the net displacement of that point at that time will be 25cm upwards.
If one of the waves is displacing a point upwards 10cm and the other wave is displacing the same point , but downwards 15cm, the net displacement of that point at that time will be 5cm downwards.
