As cells grow larger, the ratio of volume to surface area increases - like a city getting larger and larger it becomes more difficult to supply it with raw materials, dispose of wastes and effectively communicate across the increasing scale of the cell.
Smaller cells would more efficiently respond to stimuli (like hormones or exterior conditions), as there is a smaller volume of the cell with respect to the total surface area of the cell.
ex. In the event of an increasingly saline environment, smaller cells would more quickly reach an isotonic state, as less water is needed to be excreted and the cells contents are more adjacent to the membrane where osmosis occurs..
