In radio wave communication relatively there is a higher loss of signals. In fibre optic cables the loss of signal is very low .

They also tend to operate at much higher frequencies (e.g. infra-red) so the bandwidth is consequently much (10^6) higher and unaffected by atmospheric phenomena.
