If you have read about some of his adventures than you might think that they're a little absurd, but historians believe that he may have exaggerated some things. Such as his estimating with numbers like when he says "every gateway must be guarded by 1,000 men." for any city that's a lot of men in medieval times. So that is believed to be an exaggeration along with many other things that he wrote down.
