Look up Niels Bohr, circa 1915 for his atomic/energy model of electron positions in orbitals around the nucleus. Specific energy levels were the gate-keepers for each -e to enter a particular Orbital “Club”.

..... also was the begnnng of a quantum(discrete) view of physics....
