They had terrible experiences with their past government.
Explanation:
A strong central government reminded America of their previous ruler, England. In short, America and England did not get along. England banned America from many goods and services in attempts to deflate the colonies and warred with them too.
The Americans believed that a strong central government would be just as terrible as the ruling of England and that the people in power would misuse their power and follow the actions of England. If they wouldn't follow the actions of England, then they would attempt to rule the country to benefit themselves.
