The metric system is a decimal based system. Meters, grams, liters all use the same prefixes and pattern. The pattern is shown below

To change from one metric unit to another count the number of steps on the staircase like pattern, and move the decimal point that number of spaces in the direction moves.

Moving to the right the value of the prefix becomes smaller so the number of units gets bigger move the decimal to the right. Moving to the left the value of the prefixes becomes bigger so the number of units is less move the decimal to the left.
